The Toronto Beaches History
Where else but here in the Beaches could you find such a close-knit community in a major world metropolis like Toronto? Here, traditional 80 year-old cottages share the same tree-lined streets with Tudor, Victorian and Queen Anne designs, many of which have been renovated or restored.
The Beaches or the Beach as it's known to the locals was originally settled back in 1793 by the Ashbridge's family who arrived from Philadelphia. The Ashbridge's along with a small group of other pioneers originally farmed the area until the end of the 1800's
It was in the late 1800's that the beaches was subdivided into large parcel of land while at the same time, Even larger parcels of land were set aside for parks and beaches. These parcels included Woodbine Beach Park, Kew Beach Park, Scarboro Beach Park, Balmy Beach Park, together these parks formed what we now call the beach. In the early 1920's the City of Toronto expanded east to include the area known as the beach it was at this time many well to do Torontonian build cottages and full time residents.
